Project Name: A5 River Ceiriog Viaduct – bridge joint renewal

Proposed Works: Essential renewal of the Viaduct bridge joint requiring closure of the A5 between Halton and Gledrid roundabouts

Programme Start Date: Monday the 22nd of February 2021

Programme Completion Date: Tuesday the 2nd of March 2021

Client: NMWTRA

USRN: 1048371015

Principal Contractor: Alun Griffiths Construction Limited

I refer to the above and wish to inform you that the works noted will be undertaken between Monday 22nd February 2021 and Tuesday 2nd of March 2021 at this location (dates are provisional and are subject to change).

The A5 is to be closed in both directions between Halton roundabout at the A5/A483 junction in Wales and Gledrid roundabout at the A5/B5070 in England whilst the large bridge joint is removed and replaced. Traffic will be diverted via the B5070 through Chirk.

The closure will be implemented at 20:00 (when traffic flows are lower).

The works could result in a higher than usual level of noise at intervals and I take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience incurred.

'Please drive carefully', advisory '30 mph signs' and Speed activated signs will be erected along the diversion route as mitigation.

Temporary Traffic Signals with manual control will be installed at the bridge over the River Ceiriog on the B 5070 diversion route.

Traffic will be monitored on the diversion route to identify any problems which will be addressed.

Emergency Services (Police / Fire / Ambulance)

All traffic (including Emergency Service vehicles) travelling in the area to utilise the appropriate diversion route.

Abnormal loads

The bridge over the River Ceiriog on the B 5070 diversion route is normally weight restricted (17 te). Single way working under temporary traffic signal control will be used throughout the duration of the project to permit passage by 'Construction and Use' vehicles.

Holyhead Port

I would be grateful if you could inform ferry traffic of these proposed closures and advise all vehicles to drive safely along the diversion route.

Additional information

Liaison with Welsh Government Orders Branch and Highways England regarding Traffic Orders has been undertaken.

Co-ordination with NMWTRA, Highways England Area 9 and Local Authority Streetworks Managers in both Wrexham and Shropshire, regarding all aspects of the works (including suitability of diversion route) has been undertaken.

Full consideration has been given to the impact of the work on road users, residents and work force.

Information signs will be erected prior to the works advising the travelling public of the closure dates and times. Variable messaging signs will also be used on the M6, M54 and M56 to advise of the closure.

NMWTRA will inform businesses on the diversion route who may be affected by increased traffic flows at their access to the B 5070.

Co-ordination with Highways England, Shropshire County Council and Wrexham Borough Council has been undertaken to ensure no other closures are being planned on neighbouring road networks.

Winter Service Contractors (PA) have been notified (gritting actions are co-ordinated every night).

Please accept my apologies in advance for any inconvenience incurred.
